Welcome back! We are going to conclude the last post in our series on ways the Holy Spirit communicates to our human spirit, soul, and body. If you have not read the first two posts, I encourage you to read them first as this post will make more sense with the background  they give. It’s important to understand that God is a triune being and ways our spirit communicates to our soul and body. 

We are going to look at three more ways we see in scripture ways our spirit can communicate to our souls the things the Holy Spirit reveals to us in the spirit. 

Words of Wisdom or Knowledge 

Words of wisdom or knowledge come directly from the Holy Spirit. We see this in 1 Corinthians 12:8 (ESV), ”For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,“ ‭‭

This is the Holy Spirit speaking to us the wisdom needed for that moment. 

I work in this way often. When Brett and I talk and pray with people individually Brett will often see what is going on in the spirit. Whereas I will just know the answer and next steps that need to be done. I’ve asked the spirit of wisdom to live inside me and speak to me. That prayer is answered in ways of knowing what the answers to other people’s issues are. 

I’ve also seen this method of hearing from the Holy Spirit happen in the physical body. I have a friend who will feel what others feel in his body. He may walk in and feel his shoulder hurt. Then he will ask if there is anyone who needs healing in their shoulder. The person will step forward, he will pray for them, and the Lord very often heals them right then and there. 

I encourage you to ask the spirit of wisdom to partner with you when making decisions or helping others in a pastoral way. Asking the spirit of wisdom to be with you and speak to you will change your life in a really profound and marvelous way. 

A knowing of what is going on in the spiritual realm/Feeling/Discerning 

Have you ever walked into a place and instantly felt the darkness looming? How about when you are talking to a person and you seem to just know in your spirit what they are really thinking even though their words don’t necessarily match? This is a spiritual gift of discernment. Some people can feel, sense, or just know what is going on in the spiritual realm. Jesus gives us a great example in Mark 5.

Jesus heals the paralytic

“And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭2‬:‭5‬-‭11‬ ‭(ESV) (emphasis added)‬‬ 

How did Jesus see their faith or perceive in his spirit that there were those questioning? He discerned or perceived what was going on spiritually and then addressed it in the physical. He knew via his spirit what those people were thinking to themselves, and then he addressed it. 

My Friend

I have a friend who works in this way often. She will walk into a store, or even just be driving by someplace and feel the oppression from the demonic realm. She told me a story of when she had just moved to a new city and her husband was driving. Suddenly she just felt darkness. She looked up and saw a place that is in fact quite dark and promotes death. She wasn’t looking for it because she was actually looking down at the time. However, she could feel it because God has gifted her with great discernment. 

Have you ever experienced something like this? Perhaps this is a way your human spirit is trying to communicate to your human soul about what they perceive in the spiritual realm. Pay attention to those promptings as they are from the Holy Spirit. 

Dreams 

The last way we are going to talk about ways your human spirit can communicate to your human soul is through dreams. Again, I often have spiritual dreams. I have always had very vivid dreams. I never knew they meant anything until one day I was telling Brett a dream I had, and the Holy Spirit gave him revelation of what it meant. 

After that moment I wondered what other dreams I’ve had in the past that were spiritual. I asked the Lord about this and he reminded me of a reoccurring dream I had about being eaten by sharks. I asked the Lord what those dreams meant and he showed me I was afraid of getting married. The shark represented the dangers of possible outcomes of getting married. In the last dream I had about sharks, the shark actually killed me. The Lord showed me that I needed to die to my fears of marriage and trust him in the new season of life I had just entered. (I had just gotten married a few months earlier). 

Joel’s Prophecy

Joel gave this prophecy: “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.” ‭‭Joel‬ ‭2‬:‭28‬-‭29‬ ‭(ESV)‬

God gives his people spiritual dreams to help them if they will just pay attention. Recently I’ve been having a ton of dreams about having babies. The Lord showed me this baby is the church Brett and I were called to start 2 years ago. Our church has been going through a re-birth. The Lord gave us a ton of intel via the dreams about how to handle this new season. I needed to pay attention and ask the Lord what he was telling me to get the meaning. 

God gave Joseph dreams

In the New Testament we see on multiple occasions that the Lord gave Joseph spiritual dreams. In these dreams Joseph was told what to do in order to protect our savior. One example an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him to take his family and move to Egypt. They needed to leave where they were because Herod was about to go on a killing rampage. 

”Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭2‬:‭13‬ ‭(ESV)‬‬

Just think about what could have happened if Joseph just said, “That was a weird dream.” Then went on with his life like the message he was given didn’t matter. 

Pay attention to the dreams you have. In my experience I’ve learned that if I can remember my dream in detail, it is likely from the Lord. I have started recording my dreams even if I don’t understand what they mean. Often clarity comes with time. 

Revelation only comes from the Holy Spirit

In 1 Corinthians Paul gives us a list of spiritual gifts. Guess what!? Many of the ways I have just described as ways our spirit communicates with us is listed in this passage Check it out! 

”Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.“ ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬, ‭4‬-‭11‬, ‭31‬ ‭(ESV) (emphasis added)‬

Your Job

All of this is done through the power of the Holy Spirit. We can not know what the Holy Spirit says unless we are filled daily with him. Then we will be able to discern what the Holy Spirit is wanting to do or say because our human spirit will receive the message from the Holy Spirit who is living inside us. That message will then be relayed in a way our body or soul can understand.

So go seek the Holy Spirit. Allow him to fill you each day (multiple times if needed each day). Seek him and he will show you the truth. Remember the Holy Spirit is the revealer of ALL truth!
