We are going to start a new series on living water. What is living water? Where does it come from? What is the purpose of living water? Over the next few weeks we will answer these questions. I hope you will join me on this quest to better understand living water.
First Mention of Living Water
One of the earliest mentions of “living water” in the Bible is in the book of the Prophet Jeremiah.
“For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13 ESV)
The Lord calls Himself the Fountain of Living Waters. He is the source of all Living Water. It comes from Him. And since the Lord is Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:17), then Living Water is Spiritual.
This verse is actually the second mention of “living water” in the Old Testament. There’s a reference to living water as coming from the woman in the Song of Solomon. The woman represents the aspect of God in which living waters flow from. How beautiful is that?
This is one of the reasons Solomon also writes:
“Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well.” (Proverbs 5:15 ESV)
In the context of marriage, the wisdom of God through Solomon says to husbands, “Hey, let your own wife be the live-giving flow for you, not anyone else.” Or said another way, “Be faithful to your wife.”
So we see it’s a great honor for the woman to represent God in this way. And for the wives, be sure that living water is flowing through you and not dead water.
Again in Jeremiah, God is referenced as the Fountain of Living Water.
“A glorious throne set on high from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary. O LORD, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be put to shame; those who turn away from you shall be written in the earth, for they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living water.” (Jeremiah 17:12-13 ESV)
The Source of Living Water
All Living Water comes from God. He is the fountain, and He is the source. Don’t forsake this Source. Don’t leave the Source, who is God.
Now, where exactly does this special Living Water from God come from?
We get a major clue from the last chapter of the Bible, Revelation 22, starting in verse 1.
“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:1-2 ESV)
Living water flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb (aka Jesus Christ). So we see God’s throne being used as the manufacturing place of Living Water. God is the fountain, and His throne makes the Living Water which shoots up and through God Himself and flows out like a river.
Right now, this is currently in existence in Heaven as spiritual, but it will manifest physically during the Kingdom Age and afterwards.
A couple prophecies supporting my statement:
“And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the LORD, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light. On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter. And the LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day the LORD will be one and his name one.” (Zechariah 14:7-9 ESV)
Ezekiel was also shown a vision in which this happens during the Kingdom Age:
“Then he brought me back to the door of the temple, and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar. Then he brought me out by way of the north gate and led me around on the outside to the outer gate that faces toward the east; and behold, the water was trickling out on the south side. Going on eastward with a measuring line in his hand, the man measured a thousand cubits, and then led me through the water, and it was ankle-deep.
Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was knee-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was waist-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and it was a river that I could not pass through, for the water had risen. It was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be passed through.
And he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Then he led me back to the bank of the river. As I went back, I saw on the bank of the river very many trees on the one side and on the other. And he said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, and enters the sea; when the water flows into the sea, the water will become fresh. And wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish. For this water goes there, that the waters of the sea may become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes. Fishermen will stand beside the sea.
From Engedi to Eneglaim it will be a place for the spreading of nets. Its fish will be of very many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea. But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they are to be left for salt. And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.”” (Ezekiel 47:1-12 ESV)
What is Living Water
OK, so now you may be asking, “What exactly is living water?” It’s not just two hydrogen atoms connected to an oxygen atom, like we know physical water is.
Well, my lovely wife Cherise has actually defined living water in one of her previous blog posts.
She defines living water as “a spiritual substance God uses to purify people and things in the spiritual realm.”
Living water is spiritual. It originates in the spiritual realm from God’s throne. It is a substance that is extremely powerful and extremely pure. Living water is real; it exists, and it’s actually more real than your physical body right now. It takes faith to believe it exists.
Remember, the Word says:
“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6 ESV)
It takes faith to believe that God exists. It takes faith to please God. We need faith to believe that Living Water exists, is manufactured from God’s throne in Heaven, and will be physically manifested during the Kingdom Age.
Living water comes from God himself, and it is a spiritual substance with a spiritual purpose. It has been prophesied that living water will manifest in our physical world in the future. Next week we will look at the attributes of living water. I hope you will join me!
