Are you someone who remembers your dreams, or do they get forgotten the moment you wake up? I happen to be someone who remembers her dreams. My dreams tend to be very detailed, like a weird movie most of the time. Sometimes I am involved while other times it’s more like watching a movie.
Last night I had one of those vivid dreams. It was like I was watching a movie. In my dream there was a little boy who got into a fight and lost. His parents decided to put him in taekwondo so he could learn to defend himself. The little boy became really good at taekwondo and was almost a black belt. The parents sent the boy off back where his enemy was waiting for him. When the boy got there, he couldn’t fight back because his enemy was a shadow. Again this shadow enemy was beating him up, and there was nothing the boy could do to fight back. The mother in the dream said, “How do you fight an enemy you can’t touch?” And then I woke up with those words swirling through my brain. “How do you fight an enemy you can’t touch?”
This dream got me thinking. What is an enemy we fight that we can’t touch? How do we fight this enemy? So I asked the Lord about it. He revealed three enemies women tend to fight but can’t touch with our physical bodies.
Use Your Weapons
Whatever untouchable enemy you find yourself facing, I believe the answer to victory is the same. Remember what Ephesians 6:13-18 tells us,
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.”
God has given us spiritual armor to put on so we can fight untouchable enemies. Which part of your armor is the only part that will slay the enemy? The sword of the Spirit. What is the sword of the Spirit? The word of God. We slay our untouchable adversaries with the word of God.
The Lord revealed three enemies many people face that seem untouchable.
Untouchable Enemy #1
First is depression. I have met many people who suffer from depression. Most of the time it doesn’t seem to be completely debilitating. Still any kind of depression is not ok and no fun to live with.
There was a time when I suffered from seasonal blues. Every winter I would just feel down and lethargic. I didn’t know these feelings weren’t normal because I felt this way for as long as I could remember. I did eventually figure out it was due to lack of sunlight, but I still didn’t put 2 and 2 together. What my body was lacking was vitamin D. When we moved to Ireland, I started taking vitamin D and it helped tremendously. I no longer have to suffer through the winter because God showed me how to combat it.
I know that winter blues aren’t comparable to full blown depression. If you are someone who has or is suffering from this, I am so sorry. You might feel like you are fighting a battle with an untouchable opponent. And in a way you are. But here’s the thing. I believe you do have weapons you can use to fight. Recognize this fight is not just a physical fight but also a spiritual fight. You have a real enemy who loves nothing more than to remind you how depressed you are.
If you have read this blog for long, you know I am a firm believer in using the word of God as a weapon against the demons who try to steal our joy from us. If you are suffering from depression, or even just the winter blues, go find some scripture to combat these false thoughts and feelings. Yes, they are false thoughts and feelings. God will never say any of his children are depressed. He says his children are filled with joy and peace.
Verses To Fight Against Depression
Here are a few verses you can use to start your fight against this foe.
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” Philippians 4:4 (ESV)
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11 (ESV)
“For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12 (ESV)
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 (ESV)
“I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.” Psalm 9:2 (ESV)
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13 (ESV)
“Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” Psalm 51:12 (ESV)
“Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.” Habakkuk 3:18 (ESV)
“You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.” Psalm 30:11 (ESV)
“Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.” Psalm 16:9 (ESV)
Untouchable Enemy #2
Second is anxiety and its close cousin worry, both common enemies in men and women. I can’t count the number of people I have met who tell me how they suffer with anxiety. Some even tell of times they’ve had full blown panic attacks. Anxiety is definitely an enemy that packs a punch but feels untouchable.
I have always been a person who is steady under pressure. I have never allowed worry to rule over me. However, I remember being in high school, and worry would try to make a home in my mind. Even back then, the Lord showed me how to fight worry. He led me to Matthew 6:34 (NIV), “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” I remember reading this verse over and over and over until I felt the weight of worry leave my chest.
Because I chose to fight off worry at the beginning, it never has been able to take root and define who I am. Does that mean I never worry about anything? Absolutely not! I still find myself worrying about things from time to time, but I quickly remember to surrender those thoughts to Jesus and allow him to show me the answers to all of life’s worries.
Again, I believe the key to fighting anxiety is to use the spiritual weapon God has given us. We combat lies with truth. It is a lie that anxiety is just something you will always deal with. Anxiety is the belief that something bad is going to happen. Believing the lies of anxiety produces fruit that is rotten and putrid. We can see by the fruit that anxiety comes from Satan and his demons. So we fight back with the sword of the Spirit, the word of God. Here is some ammunition to use against these lies.
Verses To Fight Against Anxiety
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:34 (ESV)
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:4-8 (ESV)
“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7 (ESV)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 (ESV)
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” Psalm 55:22 (ESV)
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 (ESV)
Untouchable Enemy #3
For me the biggest untouchable enemy has been insecurity. I have written about this extensively. Insecurity is the feeling of not being good enough. An insecure person doesn’t see the value they have, and as a result devalues themselves and likely those around them as well. How did I overcome insecurity? I learned to sharpen my sword by using the word of God to declare the truth of who He says I am every single day. In fact, I still remind myself often of who I am.
I found verses that told me the truth of who I am as a daughter of the King of kings. I stood in the mirror and proclaimed the truth everyday until I started to actually believe it. It took awhile to believe in my heart that I am who God says I am. Yes, it was a fight. No, it wasn’t easy. Yes, I still have to battle false thoughts from time to time. The good news is, the longer I stand in the truth, the more difficult it is for the enemy to convince me of the lie. I now know my worth. I believe I make a difference because I choose to say yes to all God has for me. Now, I even have the privilege of showing others the truth of who they are.
If you are like the old me and suffer with feelings of not being good enough or the idea that you don’t hold any value to those around you, do what I did/do. Get out your sword of the Spirit, the word of God, and slice those lies out of your thinking. Here are some verses to get you started.
Verses To Fight Against Insecurity
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” 1 John 4:18 (ESV)
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (ESV)
“The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.” Proverbs 29:25 (ESV)
“For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.” Proverbs 3:26 (ESV)
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Romans 8:31-37 (ESV)
The Answer Is Always The Same
Whatever the untouchable foe is in your life, the answer is the same. You stand firm on who God says you are. You put on all the protective armor. Maybe most importantly you sharpen your sword so you can slice through the enemy. The truth is, you can fight and win. These adversaries aren’t untouchable. You just have to use the right kind of weapons to be able to not only touch them but kill them.
I encourage you to use the verses I have listed, or better yet, go find your own verses. Write them down in your own handwriting. Place them all over your house, car, office, and anywhere else you can think of. Read them out loud everyday. I promise, eventually you will start to believe those words. That is when the real victory comes. The enemy won’t be able to have control over your thoughts and emotions any longer. You have renewed your mind like it says in Romans 12. I’m not saying the fight will be easy, but you can conquer these untouchable enemies. You just need the right kind of weapons!
