Last week we began our discussion on Jesus the overcomer. We are looking back on all the past lessons from this series and discovering how Jesus shows us how to be and overcomer in each situation. We looked at Jesus overcoming false identities put on him by various people.

We are going to continue our look into Jesus the overcomer. Let’s dive in!

Jesus’s Authority

In this lesson we learned about the authority Jesus has and how he gave us this same authority. Let’s see how Jesus overcomes by using his authority.

Jesus Calms the Storm

Let’s look at one more example of Jesus showing us the authority to do what he wants done. This example is found in Mark 4:35-41.

“On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭4‬:‭35‬-‭41‬ ‭(ESV‬)‬

I believe this storm was sent by Satan to destroy the ministry of Jesus.

It was sent to attempt to kill those on board the ship because Jesus and his followers were starting to really be a burden to the plans of Satan to keep people in bondage.

However, something that Satan forgot was that Jesus has the authority to make the storm not just stop, but become still.

Jesus proved to not only those on board this boat and the boats surrounding him that he is the creator of the universe, and as such has the authority to make all things bow to his commands, but Jesus also proved to all those evil and demonic spirits that he has more authority than they thought they had.

Jesus overcame the power and “authority” of the demons and principalities and put them in their rightful place: under his feet.

How You Are An Overcomer

Just as Jesus demonstrated his authority over the storm, so he has given you authority. What is Jesus teaching us in this demonstration of power and authority? Jesus gives us authority to actually calm the physical storms that come against us from the enemy. When witchcraft is used to manipulate the weather, we have been given the authority to stop it. Whatever Jesus does in the physical is an example of the same power and authority he gives to us.

Remember what Jesus said in John 14:12.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” ‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭12‬ ‭(ESV)‬‬

Jesus told us we will do the same works he did. Not only that but we will do greater works than he did. I’m not sure what those greater works are, but I am always asking Jesus to show me what those works are because I want to do them!

Jesus and Healing

God wants you healed up.

Disease did not originate with God. In fact, God wants you healed up. This is a paradigm shift. He wants you healthy in body, soul and spirit. He has pre-ordained for you to be healed. This transacts through the blood of Jesus Christ from before the foundation of the world.

Two verses that prove this truth, both in Old and New Testament are these:

“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 (ESV)

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)

Jesus overcame sickness and wounding by shedding his blood for you and for me. It doesn’t matter the root cause of the disease or wounding, Jesus has overcome it.

The truth is: you are healed, and you are going through the process of seeing this healing become a reality. This happens in the physical realm, the emotional or soul realm, and also in the spiritual realm.

How You Are An Overcomer

Remember, Jesus overcame sickness and wounding by shedding his blood for you and for me. It doesn’t matter the root cause of the disease or wounding, Jesus has overcome it.

Furthermore, we are told that when we lay hands on the sick and pray they will be healed.

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” James‬ ‭5‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭(ESV)‬‬

“And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭16‬:‭17‬-‭18‬ ‭(ESV)‬‬

Not only will Jesus overlay his healing on your body, soul, and spirit, but he has also given this ability to help others overcome sickness and wounding with prayer.

Jesus the Heir

Next, we talked about being heirs with Jesus. In this lesson we discussed the truth that we are no longer slaves because we are sons of God. Recall we learned about the realms of Jehovah Shalom (The God of Peace) and Jehovah Jireh (The God who Provides).

Satan Tries to Steal Jesus’ Inheritance

We see a time when Satan tried to steal the inheritance given by the Father to Jesus. Part of Jesus’ inheritance is setting us free from sin and death. We are part of Jesus’ inheritance. Satan tried to convince Jesus to accept his inheritance and give up his true inheritance.

“And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.” Matthew‬ ‭4‬:‭3‬-‭11‬ (‭ESV)‬‬

We can thank Jesus for standing firm on the truth and using the sword of the spirit to slice through the deception of Satan.

How You Are An Overcomer

Jesus conquered the temptations thrown at him by Satan, the deceiver. Just as Jesus conquered sin, so we can reject false inheritance for our true inheritance.

If you recall in our discussion on being an heir with Christ, we talked about living and working out of the realms of Jehovah Shalom and Jehovah Jireh. We talked about the fact that when we live and work out of those realms, we are no longer slaves to fear and lack.

No longer slaves

“And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.” Galatians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭(ESV)‬‬

You are no longer enslaved to fear, anxiety, and lack. No, your inheritance as a son of God is peace and provision. You can trust that the God who conquered sin and death, is the same God who sets you free from all those things that once held you in bondage. Remember Jesus came to give us life and life abundantly. We don’t have to wait to die to live the abundant life. The abundance of provision and peace are yours right here, right now. You simply need to accept this inheritance and go live in the realm of provision and peace. Jesus gives us the inheritance of peace and provision right here, right now. Do you believe it?

We are going to pause here for this week. Next week we will finish up our overview on the entire series of Cycles of the Messiah. I hope you will join me!
