We are on our final sign Yahweh gave to Moses when Moses was told to lead God’s people to freedom. We talked about the sign of Moses’ staff turning to a snake and his hand becoming leprous. Today we are going to look at the final sign of water turning into blood.
Water to blood
The last sign God gave Moses was turning the water to blood. Exodus 4:9 (ESV) says, “If they will not believe even these two signs or listen to your voice, you shall take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground, and the water that you shall take from the Nile will become blood on the dry ground.”
Later, one of the ten plagues is turning the whole Nile River to blood. This sign always seemed strange to me. Why turn water to blood? I asked the Lord about this, and he reminded me that without blood, there is no salvation. Even the Israelites needed blood for their salvation from the Egyptians. Hebrews 9:22 (ESV) tells us, “Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Without the blood, there could be no salvation for the Israelites. The Israelites knew this. You can be sure when they saw all the blood, they thought about how the shedding of the lamb’s blood cleanses them from their sin.
This sign was a reminder to the Israelites that Yahweh saves those covered by blood. Of course the final judgment God placed on the Egyptians was the death of their firstborn son for all those who failed to cover their doorposts with lamb’s blood. God’s people could only be saved after the blood of the lamb covered them. They knew this. I have no doubt when they saw this first sign of the water turning into blood, they knew exactly what it meant.
Jesus turns water to wine
What miracle did Jesus do that corresponds to the miracle he did through Moses? He turned water into wine. You recall the story. Jesus had been invited to a wedding. The hosts of the wedding ran out of wine before the end of the celebration. Mary, his mother, told the people Jesus could fix their problems. Jesus had the attendants fill up jars with water, and when they served the water, it was the best wine. (See John 2)
How does this correlate to Moses turning water to blood? First, Jesus is turning one substance into another. Water to wine and water to blood. There is no doubt that wine, blood, and water are all very different substances.
Second, both wine and blood are a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice. Recall at the last supper Jesus told us the wine represents his blood that is shed for us. So when he turned the water into wine at the wedding, he was foreshadowing his death on the cross where he would shed blood to cleanse us from all our sins. Also, do you remember when the guard pierced Jesus’ side after he died? What came out? Blood and water. It’s as if Jesus sealed the new covenant with his blood and water.
Lastly, Jesus is able to change physical things into spiritual things. Remember, the spiritual always trumps the physical. If Jesus says your prayer is answered in the spirit, then it is also answered in the physical. He makes provision where it seems impossible.
What Is Our Lesson
What has the Holy Spirit been showing you during this series? Perhaps he has shown you he has given you authority in an area, but you are hesitant to accept that authority because you don’t feel equipped for that authority? If this is you, repent. Change your mind. Accept the authority, knowing it is God who gave it to you. Trust God to teach you how to steward that authority. Decide you will walk in your full calling with boldness. You will be amazed at what the Lord will do for and with you when you fully accept his calling in your life.
Perhaps you have seen that your heart isn’t as clean as you thought it was before God. We are all in the sanctification process. Maybe God has shown you something you are spending your time on is making your heart dirty before him. Again, if this is you, repent. We all make adjustments throughout our Christian walk. Thank God for showing you the real condition of your heart. Now you will be able to surrender fully to the Lord, and he can clean your heart just like he did with Moses’ hand.
Need A Miracle?
Maybe you have been shown you need a miracle in your life. The kind of miracle only the blood of Jesus can accomplish. Are there things in your family bloodline that need to be taken care of? The blood of Jesus is powerful enough to reverse curses put on us through our bloodline. Do you need healing? The blood of Jesus covers that too! Have you had people declare curses over your life? Maybe you yourself have made a vow that you now regret. Take those vows before the courts of Heaven and allow the Father/judge to make them null and void. The blood of Jesus covers even word curses placed on us by ourselves or others.
May you be blessed as you walk in relationship with Yahweh. He always looks forward to spending time with you! I encourage you to spend some time with him and ask him what he wants to tell you regarding this message of authority, heart condition, and salvation.
